The History of San Marcos, California site is a project of History 502: History and New Media Technologies, a Digital History course in the History Graduate Program at California State University San Marcos. The purpose of the project is to study the history of the city of San Marcos to track the development of the town between 1930 and 2000.
The site tells the story of the town using primary sources drawn from newspaper articles. During the years between 1930 and 2000 the area transformed from a farming community into a city that hosted two institutions of higher education: California State University San Marcos and Palomar College. The story of this transformation is told through the decades primarily through press accounts.
The research conducted by the class is gathered into an archive. Each primary source can be viewed in the "Items" tab. The items are broken into collections by decade or by contributor. The students of the course created an exhibit of items focusing on the area now occupied by California State University San Marcos, which was formerly the Prohoroff Poultry ranch.
